Some Changes for Summer 2007

Today we opened applications for summer 2007 funding. There are several changes this summer:

  1. You now apply online instead of by email. You can log in using your news.ycombinator account, edit and save your application on the server, then click on "submit" when it's finished.

  2. We've increased the amount we invest. We actually started this last fall for the present (winter) batch of startups, because we were worried some groups were feeling a little pinched. Instead of $6000n we now invest $5000 + $5000n. So a startup with two founders now gets $15k instead of $12k, and one with three gets $20k instead of $18k.

  3. We're now going to have two investor days for the summer startups, one in Boston and another a few days later in Silicon Valley. We decided to do this because the investor situation is so much better in California than Boston that we worried the summer startups were getting shortchanged. So now they'll get to present in both Boston and California. As long as we have offices in both places, why not? And it should definitely light a fire under the wimpy investors in Boston if they know all the startups will be presenting in Silicon Valley a few days later.

  4. We'll also have new, more powerful slow cookers. This is probably not very exciting to applicants, but it is pretty exciting to me. The previous generation of slow cookers really took the slow part literally.
