Last week, we interviewed Wren about their Early Decision experience. This week, we talked to GreenTiger.
For those of you who don’t know, if you’re a student, applying Early Decision to YC allows you to apply now for the summer batch.
GreenTiger is an app that allows users to trade US stocks from India, commission-free. Tyler Burnam was starting his senior year at Dartmouth and Prateek Swain was starting his senior year at Princeton when they applied to YC. Both majored in Computer Science.
How did you find out about Early Decision?
We found out about Early Decision through a blog post a YC alum shared with us in September. We had been working on a product and getting advice from him. I personally thought it was too early to apply, but Tyler and Thomson (Framed W14) convinced me that it was the right thing to do.
What convinced you to apply? Did Early Decision play a role?
Early Decision played a big role since we were both evaluating our job offers and trying to evaluate starting a startup vs. the safety of big jobs (and the trap you can get in). Knowing that we got into YC early helped us stop worrying about college and jobs and focus on building our startup. Early Decision played a big role in alleviating the stress and hedging our risk.
What was the most valuable aspect of YC?
The people were the most valuable part. We got incredible advice from the partners, alums, and batchmates who helped us during the program in immeasurable ways. The entire social gamification process that happens during the batch really helps you push yourself to constantly do better. That helped us push through with our company.
Would you encourage other recent grads to start a startup? To do Early Decision? Why or why not?
Resounding yes to both. Early Decision not only helped us both take the plunge right out of college, but made us switch from a “college startup” mindset to actually treating this like our livelihood much earlier in the process. Beyond that, it was amazing to have a community of other Early Decision founders that we could connect with and get close to during the program. It was great to have a support network in place.
