About Clarion

Clarion is building the most advanced AI communication layer for healthcare, enabling clinics overwhelmed by routine calls and messages to finally come up for air. Our AI agents automate complex workflows end-to-end, freeing staff to focus on patient care. We are an in-person company based in New York.

The reality of healthcare today: clinics miss 30-40% of inbound calls due to staffing shortages, while patients struggle to connect with providers. We've built AI agents that handle scheduling, billing, prescription refills, and more—serving tens of thousands of patients monthly.

We're growing rapidly, serving dozens of customers including virtual care companies, outpatient health systems, and a $5B publicly traded health insurance company. With demand surging and revenue quadrupling in recent months, we're scaling our team.

We've raised $5.3M and are backed by Accel , Y Combinator , Sequoia (scout), as well as the founders of Ophelia, Medallion, Counsel Health, Elemy, Sana, and more.

Our clinician-led founding team combines healthcare operations expertise with technical excellence. Dr. Ryan Gallagher, our CEO, is a Stanford/Harvard-trained physician from the founding teams of Two Chairs and Ophelia (YC W20). Jeffrey Lamothe, our CTO, worked on voice AI at Amazon Alexa and led AI/ML projects at Salesforce and Citi's AI lab.

Join us as we transform healthcare communication. We're creating a future where patients receive faster resolutions, staff are happier, and providers have more time for what matters most: patient care.

Why Join Us?

  • Early-stage with strong market validation : We have dozens of paying customers with rapidly growing revenue and strong market signals, while offering the high-impact environment of an early-stage startup.

  • Solving a massive healthcare challenge : We're addressing a critical problem in healthcare communication that affects millions of patients and providers daily, with technology that can truly transform the patient experience.

  • Technical founding team : You'll work directly with experienced founders who deeply understand both healthcare operations and technical development, enabling faster decision-making and better product outcomes.

  • Cutting-Edge Tech Frontier: You’ll harness the latest generative AI models—LLMs, voice synthesis, and real-time transcription—to craft conversational agents that transform healthcare communication, while driving innovation to push these technologies beyond their current limits.

  • In-person collaboration advantage : We've built in-person since day one and maintain this as a strategic advantage—we move faster, build stronger bonds, and create a cohesive culture.

What you'll be working on

  • Design and implement robust backend services for our conversational AI platform, focusing on reliability, scalability, and performance

  • Develop LLM-based chat and voice experiences, leveraging retrieval augmented generation, function calling, and prompt engineering

  • Extend communication and telephony infrastructure used to orchestrate AI phone calls, messages, and actions

  • Implement secure customer integrations with healthcare systems using GraphQL APIs, Restful APIs and RPA

  • Optimize monitoring, logging, and analytics systems to track system performance and improve AI capabilities

Requirements

  • Strong backend engineering experience ( 3+ years ) at startups or fast-moving companies

  • Proficiency in our tech stack: NodeJS, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, and AWS infrastructure

  • Experience with secure systems that handle sensitive data, ideally in HIPAA-compliant environments

  • Solid understanding of database design, query optimization, and API development for high-concurrency systems

  • Excited to work in-person in our New York office, collaborating closely with the team

You are a good fit if

  • You build with intensity and excellence —shipping solid code fast, tackling tough problems from start to finish, and holding steady under pressure.

  • You take full ownership of your work, acting with high agency in unclear, shifting situations.

  • You bring technical passion and a team spirit —driven to solve hard challenges and lifted by working closely with customers and teammates.

Interesting Technical Challenges

  • Generative AI at Scale: Deploy at-scale production systems using generative AI models, tackling safety, alignment, and real-time monitoring.

  • AI for Healthcare Conversations: Build voice agents that understand medical terminology, navigate complex clinical workflows, and make real-time decisions with accuracy comparable to trained medical staff.

  • Real-time Voice Infrastructure: Create a system that processes speech in milliseconds, handles multiple concurrent calls, and maintains high availability for mission-critical healthcare communications.

  • Integration with Fragmented Systems: Connect seamlessly with diverse healthcare platforms—from modern cloud APIs to decades-old legacy systems—creating a unified communication layer.

  • Highly Personalized Experiences: Develop AI that remembers patient preferences, adapts to individual communication styles, and creates natural conversations that feel remarkably human.

What we offer

  • Transformative impact : Build technology that directly improves healthcare for millions—your code will liberate medical staff from administrative burden and give patients seamless access to care

  • Growth trajectory : Join our founding team, grow into leadership, build your team, and shape the technical direction of a rapidly scaling company

  • Technical frontier : Work at the bleeding edge of AI and voice technology, solving problems most engineers never get to tackle

  • Career opportunity : Position yourself at the convergence of healthcare and conversational AI, building solutions that healthcare organizations desperately need

  • Exceptional compensation : Competitive salary, meaningful equity, and comprehensive benefits including 100% covered healthcare, flexible time off, 401(k)

Interview Process

At each stage, we decide within 24hrs and update you shortly after:

  • First Chat (15min) [Virtual]: A casual conversation about the role and your experience to see if there's a good initial fit.

  • Experience Review (30min) [Virtual]: We'll talk about your technical background and the projects you're most proud of building.

  • Technical Assessment (1hr) [Virtual]: Solve a practical coding problem with our CTO in your preferred programming language.

  • Team Day (Half-day) [In-Person]: Visit our New York office to meet the team, collaborate on real engineering challenges, and see if we're a good match for each other.

If you're excited about building technology that transforms healthcare communication while working in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment, we'd love to hear from you.
