About the role

About the role

We are seeking a Biomedical Engineer to help design, test and optimize a microfluidic-based device that offers multiplex detection yet is simple and easy for a cancer patient to use. The ideal candidate has a passion for developing medical devices that can improve patient outcomes. You will help bridge the gap between science and engineering with knowledge of both the requirements and limitations of biochemical assays as well as considerations for product design and manufacturing. The multidisciplinary nature of this role means you will work closely with Cleancard’s Scientists, Software, and Mechanical Engineers to help integrate our chemical assay technology with a point-of-care platform and bring our first diagnostic offering to market. This role is based in our San Francisco (Dogpatch) office/laboratory.

Even if you feel like you don’t meet all of the qualifications, we encourage you to apply!

Research shows that while men apply to jobs where they meet an average of 60% of the criteria, women and other underrepresented people tend to only apply when they meet 100% of the qualifications. At Cleancard, we welcome diverse perspectives and people who think rigorously and aren't afraid to challenge the status quo. Cleancard is an equal opportunity employer; we celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment, free from discrimination or harassment, for all employees.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize a point-of-care platform including fluid handling, reaction chambers, and detection zones.
  • Work with Cleancard’s internal R&D teams and external collaborators to prototype, test and troubleshoot devices to achieve product performance goals.
  • Help to iterate product design, seeking to convert complex chemistry and mechanics into a user-friendly device.

Key Qualifications

  • Master’s or PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Experience with diagnostics, biosensor technologies, and integration of biological assays in microfluidic systems.
  • Proven ability in designing and testing microfluidic devices, with knowledge of fabrication and materials used in biomedical applications.
  • Plus points for familiarity with regulatory standards (e.g ISO, FDA) and quality control processes for medical devices.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally with teams across science, engineering, and design.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to innovation.
  • Ability to successfully participate in a fast-paced, highly creative and enthusiastic, start-up environment with people who are motivated to succeed together as a team.

Why Join Us

  • Be part of a visionary team that is set to change the way diagnostic testing is done.
  • Work in a collaborative and innovative environment with leading experts across various fields.
  • Competitive salary and benefits package.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development in a fast-paced startup setting.
  • Make a tangible impact on healthcare and improve patient outcomes through at-home diagnostics.
