About the role

About Fella Health

Fella Health helps middle-aged men live 10 years longer.

We are the telemedicine clinic for bigger guys, worldwide. We use medical weight loss treatment to solve our fellas' most pressing healthcare need, then remain a fella's core healthcare provider for the rest of their life - focused on men's health, longevity, mental health, and primary care.

We will have served 1 million fellas by the end of 2026, and 10 million fellas by the end of 2028.

Our mission is to solve male obesity worldwide, by accelerating the take-up of GLP-1s in middle-aged men. From this, we’ll become the world’s leading men’s health brand.

We’ve grown >150x since Sept 2022, grown >10x since Nov 2023, and are strongly cashflow positive. We have expanded our state coverage to >95% of US population, have started to expand our clinical protocol beyond weight (e.g. testosterone), and are eyeing up international expansion.

We're still a young startup and are moving quickly. We have a long way to go. This is still Day 1.

The opportunity as Health Coach

Fella Health is building a world-class team. As a Health Coach at Fella Health, you're an important part of the early team. You'll work closely with our Program Lead to deliver high-quality coaching to your fellas (Fella customers), using our in-app program and supporting protocols. You'll also collect feedback to shape our program & processes, then help implement those improvements. Your primary role is as a brilliant health coach, and you'll have ample room to shape Fella's future as we scale.

This role is fully remote, and is part-time (>20hrs/wk). You choose your working hours.

You'll work closely with Fella’s Founder Richie, and report directly to our Program Lead Jordan.

Key Responsibilities

_ Individual Coaching _

You'll be in charge of the program outcomes of your ~100 fellas. You'll triage fellas based on what type of problems they're facing, take them through the appropriate program material, and keep them engaged in the program. You'll be their point of call if they have questions about Fella. You'll be in regular contact with each of them:

  • 1-1 calls every 2 weeks

  • 1-1 texting in-between calls

_ Extra: Helping the Care team _

You may be asked to help communicate fellas’ needs to the care team, raising these urgently ad hoc.

Need to have

  • Hours: you're able to work at least 20 hours/week.

  • Education: You have a minimum of 1 Bachelors degree in a related area e.g. Psychology, Health Sciences, Behavioral Health, Nutrition, Sports Medicine etc.

  • Experience: You have 2+ years experience as a health coach, psychologist, therapist, dietitian - or something closely related.

  • Cognitive: We focus on psychological techniques (e.g. ACT & CBT), so you'll either need to be comfortable with these already, or happy upskilling quickly.

  • Empathy: You understand that obesity is a complex health condition with a wide range of interacting, biopsychosocial causes. You have a sound awareness of obesity stigma and the negative impact this has on people living with obesity.

  • Methodology: You are happy working to a tight protocol to guide your fellas through a structured in-app program, supported by 20-minute biweekly calls and text support.

  • Technology: You are tech-savvy enough to comfortably navigate your way around new software.

  • Resilience: This will be some of the most rewarding work you’ve ever done, but it won’t be easy. The program and protocols will be constantly iterated to improve as we scale. You'll need to run with the fast pace and keep your fellas engaged along the way.

Nice to have

Coaching skills

  • Communication: You are a compelling and caring communicator over video & text.

  • Friend: Many fellas have never opened up about this before, so you'll make your fellas feel comfortable by being personable. You'll know when and how to joke around with your fellas.

  • Sales: You may have inbound sales experience to help out the growth team if needed.

  • Customer Service: You have likely worked in a customer-facing role before, providing impeccable service as your default

Cultural skills

  • Managing yourself — You own your schedule, your habits, your happiness, your life. Your team-members help you flourish, but the eventual responsibility lies with you.

  • Seeing systems — You recognize the system which produces the outcome, and focus on improving the system to fix the true cause of an issue.

  • Positive-sum thinking — You think in terms of collaboration, not competition. You prioritize working alongside your teammates to serve our fellas, however that may look.

Our cultural standards

These are the core cultural standards to which we hold ourselves & our team-member at Fella

  • Belief in the mission — we will have served 10 million fellas by the end of 2028 (1 million fellas by end of 2026) and we transform the life of most fellas who join. We have a lot of work to do. We are obsessed with our fellas and are dedicated to the mission.

  • Bulldozing barriers — the world is malleable and we shape it. We truly believe this and act accordingly. We are relentlessly resourceful and are at the mercy of no-one but ourselves.

  • Unwavering integrity — we are at the frontier, so we often live in ambiguity with no trodden path. When we can’t look to others for guidance, we must maintain impeccable ethics and unwavering integrity.

  • Enduring frugality — we are frugal. We hate being wasteful and we are anti-luxury. We spend our cash wisely & carefully - in a way that would make our grandmas proud.

  • Do what is needed — speed is critical and often the solutions we need are messy. We are comfortable moving quickly, taking on gritty work, and owning projects from noticing the problem to delivering the outcome.

  • Distaste for incompetence — we’re highly capable. We have a dedication to excellence and reject incompetence. We’re obsessed with our role, with a commitment to compounding self-improvement.

  • Commitment to candor — we believe in open communication and transparency. We are clear & caring communicators, welcoming feedback.

  • Only the paranoid survive — the road of expansion is bumpy. We are not fair weather sailers; we embrace the storms. However much we’ve already done, however far we’ve already come — all our work is still ahead of us.

  • Keep your head down — we’re boring people doing exciting work. We don’t chase short-term status: we ignore short-term dopamine hits and focus on what matters. Outsiders will underestimate us and we revel in that.

🎯 “You just build a fucking amazing experience. Make each step amazing. Make every decision in the long term interest of the fella. Give the fella massively more value than you take.” — a poetic extract from one of our advisors

Benefits

  • Compensation: $15k-30k/yr total comp equivalent split between cash & equity

  • Professional development: $500/yr (pro-rated) budget for books, courses etc

  • Remote: our team is fully distributed across the world and functions fully remotely

  • What are we missing? We're still early so you get to shape our culture.

About Fella Health

Fella Health is the telemedicine clinic for men with obesity, backed by Y Combinator. With Fella, patients meet an obesity specialist to prescribe FDA-approved medications, while they undertake personalized health coaching through our app.

Obesity is the largest chronic disease in the US (>$100bn spent each year) and the traditional solution ("move more, eat less") only works long-term for ~10% of people. But obesity treatment is radically changing due to a new wave of medication options which are 3x more effective than previous options. In addition, only 10% of those using weight management services are men: all programs market to women, not tackling the stigma men feel around this.

Fella's founder is Richie Cartwright (https://www.linkedin.com/in/richard-cartwright). Richie personally struggled with binge eating for 6 years. After studying at Cambridge University, he built and sold an AI company working with the UK government. He built a 10k-follower Instagram community around men's binge eating.
