About the role

tl;dr

We are seeking a highly proactive and product-minded Full Stack Engineer.
We grew from 0 revenue to 20+ people and >2M ARR in the last 18 months, can’t keep up with the demand of our customers and need to add more capacity ASAP.
You should thrive in a high-energy, and fast-paced environment and ideally have substantial hands-on experience with our tech stack (mainly: Node.js, TypeScript and SQL).

  • Location: Berlin, Germany (On-Site)*
  • Contract Type: Full Time
  • Start Date: ASAP

Why Kombo

Kombo is a YC-backed, fast-growing start-up, building a global unified API for HR, payroll and recruiting systems.

We grew from 0 revenue to >2M ARR within 18 months (top ~5% of VC-backed startups) and your work will significantly impact our tech product used by CTOs and engineering teams. You will work with a modern tech stack and we encourage you to keep up to date and bring new additions to our development setup.
You will have many opportunities to take on new responsibilities and “fast-track” your career and personal growth (do you want to start a startup at some point?), in line with Kombo’s fast growth itself (we're on-track to 3x revenue and team this year!).

In addition, we offer highly competitive compensation, shares in the company, and a supportive community. We're serious about good communication and eliminating frustrating politics.

Overall, if you’re looking for an opportunity with asymmetric career growth, a fantastic team spirit, inspiring people (details and fun pictures here!), and impactful work - we think Kombo could be a great fit.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own full-stack initiatives to extend our product
  • Integrate various third-party providers
  • Improve the company culture with your insights and experience
  • Participate in crucial product decisions
  • Mentoring more Junior profiles (for senior profiles)
  • Contribute to tech infrastructure (optional)

What you bring

On a high level, we are looking for entrepreneurial people that are at the top-of-their-game. People at Kombo come from Harvard, Oxford, CODE etc., 50% are ex-founders themselves and in general have always done hard, impressive things. Specifically for this role, we are looking for the following skills:

  • Expertise in designing B2B Software applications
  • Ideally 2+ years of software development experience (but open to juniors)
  • Proficiency or capacity to learn our tech stack: Node.js, React, Postgres, Prisma, TypeScript
  • Enthusiastic and collaborative work attitude
  • Previous experience leading a team is a plus!
  • Previous founding experience is a plus!

KOMBO IS NOT FOR YOU IF

  • You want to primarily work from home or remotely

There’s nothing wrong with that but we have chosen an in-office culture, because this has been working best for us.

  • You currently don’t want to be in a demanding work environment

Startups are great places to learn and grow but they can also be demanding and stressful from time to time. Due to our fast growth, this won’t be any different at Kombo. We are all putting in a lot of effort and time and we believe this is what makes us successful.

  • You are completely new to the industry and need a lot of training

You’ll need to have a solid technical skillset (at least 1-2 years of experience as a developer or having had exposure in a different way) and ideally some experience working in a startup. If this isn’t you but you know you have something to bring to the table - by all means - please still apply!

Equal Opportunity

Kombo is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. We believe that our work is better and our culture is improved when we encourage, support, and respect the different skills and experiences represented at Kombo. We do not discriminate based on race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, parental status or disability status.

*Disclaimer We can only relocate candidates who are in the EU.

About the interview

We usually have four steps + reference calls:

  • Phone screen (could we be a good fit?) [25-min]
  • Technical screen (what would it be like to work with you?) [1h]
  • Lunch - close to the office (get-to-know on a more personal level) [1.5h]
  • On-site (what would it be like to work together?) [paid full-day]

In more detail:

Phone Screen

This stage is a more informal call to get to know more about the role, and for you to evaluate whether it’s a good fit for you. We are looking for people with a strong interest in startups; this is often exhibited by past experience working at or starting one yourself.

Technical screen

In the technical interview, we ask you to present a past project you've worked on - we describe this in more detail here: https://www.notion.so/kombo-api/Tech-Interview-with-Kombo-baa7e0973bee4b1e82b52d9910c7952c?pvs=4.
Alternatively, we can also do a take-home challenge or a live coding interview.

Lunch

This again is a more informal step where we grab lunch together and visit the office afterwards. The goal from our side is to get to know each other on a more personal level and to discuss the role more in-depth. We also have a lot of time for questions from your side.

On-Site

The last step is a full day (we will pay you for your time) in our office where we work on a project in our code base together, to emulate actually working together as close as possible.

About Kombo

Kombo builds a unified API for HR, payroll and recruiting systems. We're working with companies of all sizes - from Fortune 500 companies down to early stage startups - to help them integrate dozens of software vendors within a few days instead of months.

Instead of having to get their hands on a sandbox environment, build the integration code and figure out the edge cases dozens of times, they can only once use a well documented and clean abstraction provided by Kombo.

We grew from 0 revenue to >$1M ARR within a year and are looking for skilled engineers to help us improve and scale our product. For more details (and pictures!), check out our culture page!
