Data observability for modern data teams
Metaplane helps companies trust their data.
Our observability platform helps data teams (like Imperfect Foods, Reforge, Drift, Vendr, Appcues, and many more) continuously monitor their data pipelines so they know when things break, what went wrong, and how to fix it — before executives message them.
We’re a Boston-based, remote-friendly company founded by MIT and HubSpot alums. We’re backed by leading investors such as Y Combinator, Flybridge, and notable angel investors, including the founders of HubSpot, Okta, and Lookout.

We're looking for a senior software engineer, backend to join our growing world-class engineering team. The role will be responsible for all aspects of our backend, including our suite of integrations, machine learning pipeline, and metadata monitoring infrastructure. If you love owning and shipping features to customers, are excited to build scalable and resilient systems our customers rely on every second of the day, and are always learning and sharing best practices with the team, then this role is for you.
Work with our product team and customers to design, build, and ship core features to the Metaplane platform using Python and Java
Build integrations with tools throughout the data pipeline ecosystem including ETL tools (e.g. Airflow), warehouses (e.g. Snowflake), transformation tools (e.g. dbt), and business intelligence tools (e.g. Looker)
Scale our observation and machine learning pipeline that collects billions of metadata records for our customers
Scale our infrastructure in AWS using tools like Terraform
Improve our backend developer experience using tools like Gitbook, CircleCI, Datadog, and Sentry
Debug and fix production issues across multiple systems that are affecting our customers
Review code changes and design specs from teammates
Has 3+ years working with backend technologies like Java, Python and Node.js (languages matter less than engineering experience, so don’t worry if you haven’t used one of these languages in a while!)
Has experience building scalable backend and distributed systems like APIs and workers. You’ve used or are interested in technologies like PostgreSQL, TimescaleDB, Redis, Message Queues, and ElasticSearch.
Has an extremely high bar for quality software - you can move fast and ship scalable code with the help of your team
Enjoys being close to the customer and owning projects to completion
Desire to own engineering end-to-end. Our engineers engineer systems from scratch, deploy into production environments, and make sure the code is maintained.
Love for talking to users, understanding their needs, and making sure your product meets their requirements.
Appetite for working in fast-paced environments where you get to work directly with customers and make decisions that have a huge impact on the business.
Desire to create and maintain an engineering culture of craftsmanship
Familiarity with the modern data stack (e.g. Fivetran, Snowflake, dbt, Looker)
Competitive salary and equity
Fully covered health, dental, and vision insurance
401(k) plan with employer match
Work-from-home stipend
Ownership of your work, and collaboration with a closely-knit team
Metaplane is an equal opportunity employer and we value diversity and inclusion at our company. We welcome people of different nationalities, backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and perspectives. If you don’t feel like you hit 100% of the requirements above but are passionate about our mission and space, please apply.
