About the role

Momentic is the modern standard for software testing. Our AI-powered platform is already accelerating engineering teams at some of the fastest-growing companies in the world, including Quora, Retool, Podium, Chegg, Runway, and many more.

We’re currently a team of six looking to hire an Applied AI Engineer. As a member of the founding team, you’ll work with cutting edge AI technology, interact with world-class customers, and influence the overall direction of the company.

We’re on a mission to revolutionize how software is built, enabling engineers to move faster without breaking things. If you’re looking to work in a high-growth environment and excited to push the boundaries of what AI can do, we would love to hear from you!

In this role, you will:

  • Collaborate closely with the CTO to build and improve AI agents that unlock important use cases within software testing
  • Own multi-agent systems that perform complex workflows such as test generation, test import, and auto-healing
  • Build rigorous eval systems and datasets that allow us to iterate on our AI layer in a data-driven manner
  • Fine-tune and deploy custom models for specific use cases and world-class customers
  • Create, design, and advocate for projects you believe are high priority during roadmap planning
  • Document everything as you go and share your expertise with the team!

You might work on projects like:

  • Developing an automated pipeline for AI agent feedback and improvement
  • Curating and publishing a public eval set of web testing tasks to buoy the industry as a whole
  • Fine-tuning cheaper, self-hostable models to enable deployment into sensitive environments (military, government, healthcare)

To succeed in this role, you’ll need to:

  • Love experimentation. We’re working on problems that no one has tackled before, so you’ll need to enjoy tinkering with prompts, model architectures, and product data to discover the optimal solutions for our use cases.
  • Enjoy solving hard problems that have both technical and product ambiguity. The internet and web browsers are both incredibly inconsistent beasts, which affects the data and tools available for AI agents. You should be comfortable with learning a bit about how the web works and excited by the prospect of solving web testing challenges.
  • Have experience with machine learning or applied AI. While we don’t expect you to have entire papers memorized, you should know your way around an LLM and have good intuition for prompting, agent architecture, fine-tuning, evals, and data generation.
  • Have a high sense of accountability and drive. We empower every member on the team with great ownership, so we need to know you can prioritize your own work without outside input. We also want to hear your ideas and vision for the AI stack!
  • Have great communication skills, both written and verbal. We’re looking for people who are not only incredibly intelligent but able to articulate their thoughts clearly.

None of these things are required, but they’ll make your application stand out (please mention them when applying!):

  • Experience with building CI/CD, model evaluation, or other developer tools
  • Experience with computer vision techniques, such as CNNs, template matching, and PCA
  • Experience with industry-standard web automation tasks, such as WebVoyager
  • TypeScript expertise

Our benefits include:

  • Attractive compensation.
  • Generous medical, dental, and vision benefits.
  • Paid company holidays, sick time, and unlimited time off.
  • Monthly credits to spend on commuting, mental health, or meals.
  • Unlimited snacks and beverages in our office.
  • Daily lunch at a variety of restaurants in the SoMa area.

About the team

We’re a fast-moving, low-ego, scrappy team of 6 backed by great investors like Y Combinator, General Catalyst, AI Grant, FundersClub, and angel investors like Aaron Levie, Theo Browne, and Kulveer Taggar.

We believe that brainstorming, planning, and communicating occur most effectively in person. Our office is located in the San Francisco SoMa District, shared with other inspiring YC-backed startups. We come into the office and share lunch together nearly every day. From time to time, we also enjoy team dinners, happy hours, and company off-sites!

About the interview

  1. Initial screen
  2. Take-home challenge
  3. 3-hour on-site at our SOMA office or over VC for non-SF applicants.
  4. Reference checks if applicable and offer!

About Momentic

One of the most tedious parts of software development is testing. The testing industry has long been plagued with archaic and fragmented software, with Selenium turning 20 years old this year.

By leveraging cutting-edge AI, we’re able to automate the most time-consuming tasks so engineers can focus on what matters, shipping features to customers. Engineers at companies like Chegg and Retool use Momentic to author tests 10X faster.

Momentic is one of the fastest-growing startups to come out of YC with strong traction. We’re generating revenue and are well-funded by some of the best investors in the Valley with years of runway.
