About the role

About Noya :

Noya is reversing climate change by removing CO2 from the atmosphere. We’re a scrappy team of engineers, scientists, and operators taking on the biggest problem anybody could be working on. We’ve developed a process that leverages abundant materials to remove CO2 directly from the air with dramatically lower capital and operating expenses than other approaches.

About the Role:

As a Process Design Engineer at Noya, your role is central to our groundbreaking initiative to accelerate the world toward carbon negativity. You will be instrumental in developing and optimizing the CO2 extraction and purification processes that power our core technology, directly contributing to our innovative carbon capture processes. This position is not just about engineering; it’s about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible to create a sustainable future. We are on the lookout for someone who is not only technically skilled but also passionate about making a real difference in the battle against climate change. You will be working in a multidisciplinary team, where collaboration is key to innovating and solving complex challenges. Your work will directly impact our ability to capture carbon efficiently and effectively, making every day an opportunity to contribute to a greener planet.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement testing protocols to evaluate the properties of new and currently-employed materials to optimize CO2 capture capacities and economic viability

  • Lead process and instrumentation design to build of our novel CO2 capture approach from benchtop and scale-ups all the way to pilot plants

  • Ensure all processes and designs comply with relevant regulatory standards and prioritize safety protocols throughout all stages of development and implementation

  • Turn models into fully developed piping and instrumentation diagrams for process builds - work with vendors to design, size, and procure operational equipment

  • Use computational modeling techniques (e.g. ASPEN, Unisim, etc.) to create unit operation and flow sheet designs

  • Develop techno-economic assessments for existing and incumbent processes, and use these models to inform R&D targets, company objectives, future products, and research directions

  • Conduct literature reviews and stay up-to-date with the latest developments in chemical engineering, and direct air capture

  • Collaborate with the research and engineering teams at Noya to run experiments, integrate new materials into our process design, build new systems and infrastructure, test new compounds and approaches, and create comprehensive reports for management - this will include writing patents and technology transfer documents

  • Emphasize quality, innovation, and sustainability in all research and development activities, aligning with Noya’s mission towards carbon negativity

Required Experience:

  • A degree in chemical engineering, industrial engineering, or process engineering

  • Prior exposure to process controls design and implementation

  • Skills with ASPEN or other model builder

  • Experience in pilot plant construction or other hands-on process building

  • A strong foundation in collaborative, multidisciplinary work environments, with the ability to engage effectively across different technical domains

  • A passion for sustainability and the drive to make a significant impact on the environment

Bonus Experience:

  • Innovative thinking and the ability to approach problems creatively

  • Eagerness to be part of a dynamic, fast-paced team working on cutting-edge technology

  • Adaptability to take on varied responsibilities in a rapidly evolving field

  • CO2 purification & compression processes

General Information:

  • Job title: Process Design Engineer

  • Team: Chemical and Materials Engineering

  • Location: Oakland, CA

  • Compensation: $115,000 - $157,000

About Noya

Noya is on a mission to accelerate the world's transition to carbon negativity. We're doing this by radically reducing the upfront capital costs and installation time required to perform direct air capture. In our approach, we're retrofitting existing pieces of industrial equipment like cooling towers and turning them into CO2 capture machines. The United States is currently home to over 2 million cooling towers, and we estimate they collectively have the ability to capture over 7 billion tons of CO2 from the atmosphere each year.

We've got an incredible lineup of early partners who in commercial real estate who collectively own hundreds of cooling towers, and we have signed carbon removal offtake agreements with leading purchasers. We're quickly charging towards the first commercial pilot of our current carbon capture technology, and we're looking for curious, driven engineers, scientists, and operators to join our team.
