About the role

About this Role:

Sonia is a conversational AI for mental health support.

Our ambition is to build an AI-based system that is orders of magnitude more effective than any existing digital health intervention. We know how to get there and are looking for a clinical lead to join us and help execute this mission.

We are building Sonia by implementing the mental model and thought process of a human therapist. You will help us understand the therapeutical thinking more deeply and work with the engineering team to translate clinical insights into tangible and concrete instructions for AI models.

You will have three main responsibilities: Making Sonia more effective, making Sonia safer, and gathering evidence to prove both of those objectively with real-world data and trials.

Initially, you will work closely with our clinical advisors, including psychologists with thousands of hours of clinical experience and industry veterans such as the co-founder and former CEO of Talkspace. Over time, you will build out and lead the clinical team at Sonia.

We want you to be involved in every part of our product and deeply integrated into our technology, strategy and operations. Only then will you be able significantly move the needle with your clinical input and make Sonia more effective.

Above everything else, we are looking for a very intelligent, hard-working and kind person who wants to commit a large part of their life to finding ways to making people happier at scale.

What you’ll do:

  • Iteratively identify therapeutical flaws in Sonia conversations, come up with theoretical solutions and collaborate on implementing them with the engineering team
  • Integrate additional therapeutical capabilities and approaches into the Sonia system
  • Establish a process and intuition around turning clinical foundations into practical instructions for an AI model
  • Continuously evaluate and improve the effectiveness of Sonia with the help of self-reported mental health assessments such as GAD-7 and PHQ-8
  • Support our research by sourcing, planning, executing and evaluating clinical trials and other academic collaborations
  • Build out and lead the clinical team at Sonia

What we’re looking for:

  • PhD in Clinical Psychology
  • Extensive experience seeing patients
  • Deep theoretical knowledge in the disciplines of CBT, DBT, and ACT
  • Previous experience working on clinical trials and digital health research
  • Work experience in a fast-growing digital health startup
  • Experience playing around with AI models and prompting in your previous role or free time
  • Willingness to relocate to Brooklyn and work long, flexible hours

We are not expecting you to fulfill every single one of those criteria. One of your responsibilities will be to build out the clinical team and find candidates to fill the gaps.

Why join us:

We will make people happier at scale.

About the interview

  • 30-minute intro call on Zoom
  • 4-hour remote working session with all co-founders (paid)
  • Take-home case study to integrate clinical expertise into Sonia (paid)
  • In-person meeting (paid; if inconvenient, I will come to you)
  • Offer

We are well-funded, having raised $3.5M from investors including Y Combinator and the founders of Verkada, Reddit, and Instacart. We are an in-person team working in Brooklyn, NY. We are fully committed to doing anything to make that work for you and the people you love.
