About Us

Substrate (www.substrate.cc) is building browser based AI agents for back office work, starting with Healthcare RCM & Billing. Our goal is to augment and replace employees, not to replace any particular software a doctor’s office uses. We’re starting by going after the $14bn outpatient RCM market, and if we’re successful, doctors will finally get paid fairly. After that, we’ll go after healthcare operations (compliance, audit, provider and staff scheduling) and financial services operations (banks, exchanges, trading firms and more).

As our first AI engineer, you'll work directly with our technical founders who have shipped AI products at scale (including one of the largest AI deployments in US healthcare) and built multiple successful startups (including Hoteltonight, Angellist, Cash App, Carbon Health, and more)

The Role

We're looking for an exceptional AI engineer to help build our autonomous agent platform and infuse large language models into traditional processes. You'll be instrumental in developing AI systems that can understand complex healthcare contracts, navigate multiple systems simultaneously, and make intelligent decisions about claims processing - all while maintaining perfect memory of every interaction.

Core Responsibilities

• Design and implement the core agent architecture that powers our autonomous healthcare billing system
• Build robust data pipelines to ingest and structure complex healthcare contracts, fee schedules, claims data and policy documents
• Develop and fine-tune large language models for specialized healthcare tasks
• Create systems to maintain perfect claim state across multiple disparate systems
• Build evaluation frameworks to ensure our agents consistently outperform human benchmarks
• Work directly with customers to understand their workflows and translate them into actionable engineering requirements

Must-Have Qualifications

• Track record of independently building and shipping ML/AI products that solve real business problems
• Deep experience with modern LLM architectures and fine-tuning approaches
• Strong software engineering fundamentals with production Python experience
• Experience building data pipelines and working with unstructured data
• Proven ability to take ambiguous problems and drive them to completion

Nice-to-Have Qualifications

• Prior founding experience or early-stage startup experience
• Experience building autonomous agents or multi-agent systems
• Healthcare or fintech domain knowledge
• Experience with browser automation and web scraping at scale
• Track record of building high-reliability systems
• Background in Data Engineering and dealing with messy real world data and documents

Compensation

• Competitive base salary: $150k - $225k
