About the role

Turion Space is seeking a skilled and experienced Spacecraft Thermal engineer. We are a startup and a small team.

As a Senior Thermal Engineer, you will lead the design, analysis, testing, and implementation of the satellite systems related to the space thermal environment and requirements. You will work closely with the Turion Space team across software and hardware systems. You will own the thermal control and management system. Your creativity, experience, and ambition will directly impact the architecture of the vehicle's systems as the missions increase in complexity.

Responsibilities

Thermal design of hardware, from initial high-level layout and analysis down to validation of performance with ground tests. Automate workflow to reduce engineering investment in the design cycle. Control the system-level thermal model Select in-house testing equipment and external testing facilities. Pursue performance/robustness improvements. Pursue operational simplicity. Produce quality documentation of your work to reduce miss-rate and improve efficiency.

Qualifications

Degree in an engineering discipline. Experience with Thermal Desktop, Simulink, Simscape, Femap, NX-NASTRAN, or ANSYS Workbench. Experience with 3-D and reduced-order thermal modeling. Experience with 3-D CAD software such as SolidWorks. Ability to identify sizing cases and quickly evaluate the impact of design decisions. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to deliver against an aggressive schedule.

About the interview

We’re looking for engineers who enjoy innovating, iterating, continuous improvement, and exhibit a strong sense of ownership and autonomy. Our small teams of engineers largely define and drive their own roadmap, and use their product sense to define and launch our satellites and subsystems.

Our interview process is designed to find these kinds of engineers. Moreover, we try to ask questions that are relevant to the types of products we build -- mostly hardware, with a bit of database, analysis and firmware.

Phone Screen

This stage is a more informal call to get to know more about the role, and for you to evaluate whether it’s a good fit for you. We are looking for people with a strong interest in startups and motivation to help them; this is usually exhibited by past experience working at or starting one yourself.

Technical Screen

Multiple stakeholders on our team will ask you questions for 45 minutes based on the role.

About Turion Space

Turion Space was formed with the vision of building the technology required for humanity's interplanetary future. Our short-term goal is to solve the most significant threat to that vision - orbital debris. The exponential growth of spacecraft and launch vehicles entering Earth's orbits has dramatically increased the risk of collisions. Even a small number of these conjunctions will lead to the inaccessibility of the final frontier. We are developing the technology to stabilize this threat. This challenge will also serve as a test-bed for future asteroid resource extraction.
