We are on a mission to make ChitChat Africa's premier communication platform.

Our messaging app allows anyone to send USD instantly to the person they are chatting to. Our virtual USD cards can be used for ecommerce. Our app can send money to banks, mobile wallets and agents in over 13 countries. Our fx rates are simple, transparent and great for the customer.

We are not just building technology – we are developing solutions that people love and use.

Background

We first developed an API for African fintechs to issue virtual debit cards but pivoted after identifying stronger market opportunities. In the process, we realized that the way people stay in touch today is largely reliant on foreign platforms, as is how people send money home. We want to change that by creating an African-built solution that combines messaging and payments in one seamless experience.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Chief Marketing Officer to join our leadership team and drive our consumer growth strategy. Reporting directly to the CEO and managing a team of 0 marketing professionals, you will be responsible for all aspects of our marketing function as we scale.

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership
  • Develop and execute our overall marketing strategy aligned with business objectives
  • Lead a marketing team of 0 (but growing)
  • Set up a team across growth marketing, brand, content, and community
  • Manage an annual marketing budget, optimizing for ROI across channels
  • Participate in executive leadership meetings and contribute to company-wide strategic decisions

GTM Strategy

  • Develop top-tier launch strategies for ChitChat features and align to business objectives
  • Lead the creation and execution of innovative go-to-market plans that drive adoption across both communications and money transfer functionalities
  • Design and optimize user acquisition funnels with clear CAC targets by market

Brand & Customer Advocacy

  • Build ChitChat into a beloved consumer brand across African markets
  • Partner with Product & Design on product discovery work
  • Champion our audiences, both existing and potential - owning our view of the total addressable market with deep understanding of user needs
  • Create customer advisory boards and feedback mechanisms to inform product development

Positioning & Messaging

  • Deeply understand our market and customers to compose powerful, differentiated positioning
  • Craft (and coach others to craft) impactful messaging frameworks that resonate with target audiences
  • Develop our voice and tone guidelines for consistent communication

Marketing Operations

  • Implement and optimize marketing technology stack (CRM, analytics, automation)
  • Develop data-driven attribution models to measure marketing effectiveness
  • Create reporting frameworks for executive and board-level marketing metrics

Growth & Lifecycle Campaigns

  • Drive user acquisition, activation, retention and referral programs
  • Develop deep understanding of customer journeys leading to targeted campaigns
  • Build and execute lifecycle marketing strategies to maximize user LTV
  • Oversee paid and organic growth channels, optimizing for efficient customer acquisition

Experience

  • 5+ years of marketing experience with at least 3 years in senior marketing roles
  • Proven success marketing consumer mobile apps, preferably in fintech, payments, or social platforms
  • Experience scaling B2C products from early adoption to mass market (500K+ users)
  • Track record of building and leading high-performing marketing teams of 5+ people
  • Experience marketing products in African markets highly preferred

Technical Skills

  • Deep understanding of mobile app growth metrics and user acquisition strategies
  • Proficiency with marketing analytics platforms (Google Analytics, Amplitude, etc.)
  • Experience with CRM systems and customer lifecycle management
  • Data-driven approach to marketing with ability to analyze complex datasets
  • Understanding of A/B testing methodologies and experimentation

Leadership & Soft Skills

  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills
  • Strategic thinker with ability to translate vision into executable plans
  • Collaborative mindset and experience working cross-functionally
  • Comfort with ambiguity and ability to thrive in fast-paced startup environment

About the interview

Our interview process involves four main stages:

1. Quick culture call (20 min)

2. Initial Call (45 min)

3. Role Specific & Case Study Discussion (90 minutes)

- Marketing strategy presentation

- Team leadership assessment

4. Final interviews with executive team (2x 60 minutes)
