Circumvent Pharmaceuticals has built an experienced team of scientists and clinicians to focus on the clinical development of a small molecule therapy for the orphan disease, CLN1 Batten. This is a fatal pediatric disease caused by aberrant levels of protein palmitoylation, a reversible modification of cysteine. Palmitoylation is a common post-translational modification that can regulate protein localization, interaction and function. Circumvent is dedicated to the treatment of Batten disease, the effects of which are most pronounced in the lysosomes of neurons. Other diseases that lead to neurodegeneration may also benefit from a treatment that leads to normalization of palmitoylation levels, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and ALS and are of great interest to the company.
