Outschool

A live online learning platform that empowers kids ages 3–18.

Outschool is an innovative education platform that offers a variety of engaging, small-group classes online. Unlike traditional classes, Outschool classes give kids the unique opportunity to explore their interests in-depth via interactive, live video by experienced, independent educators. When Outschool was founded in 2015, homeschoolers were the first to discover our classes, but it wasn’t long before kids in conventional schools began supplementing their education with fun and unique, interest-based classes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Outschool became vital to families who wanted to keep kids learning, social, and pursuing their passions. Today, Outschool offers more than 140,000 live online classes to more than 1,000,000 learners in 183 countries worldwide.

Hear from the founders

How did your company get started? (i.e., How did the founders meet? How did you come up with the idea? How did you decide to be a founder?)

Growing up my parents knew how much I loved coding and engineering. Despite not being very wealthy, they prioritized my education and love of learning and hired a tutor for me to learn all about coding. It was the reason I believe I have come so far in my education and career. I know that without that assistance things may have been different. The inspiration for Outschool is that children have varied interests or may need to learn in a different way. Learning can be fun so that was how we decided that online classes taught by real teachers and tutors would help children continue to pursue their interests or excel academically even if they need to be taught using something fun like math with Pokemon.

What's the history of your company from getting started until the present day? What were the big inflection points?

Our company began as a start-up with a large homeschooling population. In 2020 during the Covid-19 Pandemic when all children became homeschoolers, we truly caught on within the wider population. We began to expand internationally by 2021, and we have continued to grow ever since. We still serve a large homeschooling population and offer extracurricular activities and more academic classes for those looking for a different experience outside of traditional brick & mortar classrooms. We are currently in the process of expanding our tutoring offerings to help combat the issue of learning loss during the Pandemic.

What is the core problem you are solving? Why is this a big problem? What made you decide to work on it?

Do you remember sitting in chemistry class having to memorize the periodic table? Or reading a book in English class you couldn’t relate to at all? Learning doesn’t have to be dull, confusing, and completely unrelatable. Learning can and should be fun. Outschool’s mission is to inspire kids to love learning by linking learning and a child’s interests once again, making learning fun and accessible. For families needing more than conventional education has to offer, Outschool is the online learning platform that offers the widest variety of topics to suit any interest. With Outschool, learners are free to pursue their interests, connect with others around shared passions, and build confidence through progress. Outschool scales up the human connection between teachers and learners because we know interaction and engagement are what’s important for kids. * Quality: We’re the established international market leader providing live online classes that are taught by vetted, diverse, and expert teachers since 2015. * Variety: We offer the largest variety of teachers, classes, and community resources to inspire learners and support their families. * Flexibility: Our range of class options and topics are suited to your child’s unique needs and learning level. * Access: We provide an accessible option relative to private tutors, private schools, and after-school clubs. What is your long-term vision? If you truly succeed, what will be different about the world?
