About the role

Penciled (W24) helps physical therapists fill 10X more canceled appointments. Our product is live and in use across multiple PT chains nationwide.

The core of our product is an AI agent named Nicole. Nicole helps patients join the waitlist, maintains live availabilities, and texts and calls waitlist patients to fill canceled appointments. When fully deployed, Nicole fills 79% of cancellations detected and takes an average of 3 minutes to fill an appointment. Therapists using Nicole see a 194% increase in cancellations filled.

We charge a flat fee per appointment booked by our AI.

We recently closed 5 new physical therapy chains- all to use the same waitlist product. The catch is that they use different EMRs, which require us to build additional integrations. Each EMR integration is a one-time build and increases the number of physical therapists we can serve.

We need additional engineering support to help us build out EMR integrations, end-to-end monitoring and testing, and product roadmap features enabling Nicole to perform more capabilities derived from the requests which patients send to Nicole every day.

This is a full-stack role. We would prefer that you have experience building some kind of application that real people have used. Bonus if they paid for it.

On a day-to-day, you can expect to be responsible for a client (or multiple) and take ownership of prioritizing deployments and supporting client feature requests as needed.

We will target $160k-$180k in total compensation including cash and equity for this role.

About the interview

  1. 30-min interview (Behavioral)
  • During this interview, we are trying to learn about the following: (1) something impressive you’ve done at school or work, (2) whether you have built something in the past and the level of ownership you took, (3) what you are trying to accomplish in the next 3-5 years and how this fits into that.
  1. 45-min interview (Technical)
  • This interview will be to assess your strength as an engineer. A senior engineer on our team will ask you to complete two questions. One will be a standard algorithms interview question and the other will be application-based like building a UI component or calling an API.
  1. Take-home assessment (max 3 hours)
  • Based on your performance during your technical interview, we may ask you to complete a take-home assessment. If you are very impressive in the technical interview, we will skip this step.
  1. Trial (1-2 weeks)
  • The trial is the most important stage of the process for us. This is where we can get the most accurate representation of what it would be like to work with you.
  • If you have a competing offer, we can compress the timeline of the trial to get to conviction faster.

About Penciled

Who we are

Penciled (W24) helps physical therapists fill 10X more canceled appointments. Our product is live and in use across multiple PT chains nationwide.

The founder, Shawn, grew up helping his mom in her private practice, and has been building tech in healthcare ever since.

The goal and vision

Today, we serve one type of customer (physical therapists) and one use case (filling cancellations). As we grow, our product will start to expand patient-facing use cases (scheduling, intake, billing, etc.) and outpatient market segments (behavioral therapy, dental, vision, etc.). For now, though, we are focused on cracking the PT go-to-market and building core feature sets which are the foundation for the great customer relationships needed to ultimately expand use cases.

Our goal is to make the most robust patient engagement AI agent which can automate most patient-facing, time-intensive tasks between patients and front office staff.

Funding

Penciled (YC W24) has raised over $2.6M from Y Combinator, Initialized Capital, and healthcare startup founders like Derek Lo and George Hadjigeorgiou.
