Hear from the founders

How did your company get started? (i.e., How did the founders meet? How did you come up with the idea? How did you decide to be a founder?)

The driving force behind HoyTrabajas comes from a personal fire that's also burning in my co-founders. We saw how the traditional job boards have been a real headache for job seekers, especially those who are just starting. I know this because I've been there myself, hunting for my first job and not getting any feedback on my applications. That made me crazy at that moment. Now picture what's going down for all those people who aren't chasing professional jobs. They're probably in a rush to put food on the table for their families. And you know what? This struggle is very real for around 100 million low-skilled individuals in LATAM. People are feeling the pain of job finding. That was our motivation to be over this bote.

How did you decide to apply to Y Combinator? What was your experience applying, going through the batch, and fundraising at demo day?

We applied four times. The first two attempts did not result in an interview. On our third attempt, we had an interview, but it did not go well. It was on our fourth attempt that we were selected. Our time at YC has been one of the most rewarding experiences of our lives. We learned about the immense value of focusing on the product. Besides, being part of a vast network, many U.S. funds now recognize us, making our fundraising journey less challenging.

How have you kept in touch with the YC community and continued to use YC resources & programs since the batch ended?

We visit Silicon Valley twice a year to meet investors and other YC startup founders. We arrange meetings at a specific location with some partners. Every three months, we also schedule an office hour to discuss business progress and challenges.

What's the history of your company from getting started until the present day? What were the big inflection points?

  • We launched in August 2019, beginning with five people: three founders and two employees.* We connected candidates and clients through WhatsApp.* In March 2020, we secured our first B2B customers.* We raised our pre-seed funding round of 500,000 USD.* We expanded operations to the three main cities in Colombia: Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali.* We established our first version of the Job Marketplace.* In November 2021, we became part of YCombinator.* We found PMF with one of our offerings in Colombia.* In 2022, we secured a seed funding round of 5 million USD.* In 2023, we expanded our business to Mexico.* We implemented AI tools to facilitate a better experience for candidates and clients.* In Q4 of 2023, we expanded our product offerings to provide more value to our customers and increase the average annual revenue.* Currently, we have 290 clients, with Mexico accounting for over 40% of our sales. We have a team of 64 people, 70% of whom work in product development.

What is the core problem you are solving? Why is this a big problem? What made you decide to work on it?

The Latin American job market faces challenges for both employers and job seekers, particularly in lower-skilled roles:1. Limited Growth Opportunities: Job seekers often find limited opportunities for skill development and career advancement, leading to professional stagnation.2. Job Insecurity: High turnover rates in low-skilled jobs result in job insecurity and financial instability.3. Access to Quality Jobs: With a hiring success rate often below 7%, job seekers struggle to find quality jobs that match their skills and preferences.4. Lengthy Hiring Process: An 8 to 10-day hiring process may delay employment, particularly for those urgently needing a job.5. Career Development Support: High turnover environments may lack training or support programs, impacting long-term employability.6. Job Matching: Mismatches between job seekers’ skills and employer requirements cause inefficiencies in hiring.

What is your long-term vision? If you truly succeed, what will be different about the world?

Our goal is to become the leading platform in connecting low-skilled role-users with quality jobs, growth opportunities, and benefits. We are committed to transforming people's lives and making a positive impact on society while continually improving our services.
