Koala Ops

A platform for developing microservices on Kubernetes

We make running services on Kubernetes as easy as Heroku, but on your cloud and with all the flexibility and power of Kubernetes. Companies use Koala so that they don't have to hire dedicated infrastructure engineers. Although 50-70% of organizations have already adopted Kubernetes, most developers agree that it is too complex and difficult to manage. It is intended to be extremely flexible in order to solve pretty much everyone’s needs, but it can take a ton of work and many auxiliary tools to get there. As companies grow, they spend a lot on DevOps or Platform Engineers that try to reduce the burden on developers by gluing together all the 3p tools via custom internal tools. We are building an “internal developer platform” out of the box, with best practices and golden paths for building and operating services on Kubernetes. We do the research on the latest and greatest tools in the extremely vibrant ecosystem, and automatically integrate for you the tools you want to use. We operate on our customers code and in your Cloud environment, so they never locked in and never restricted, as is common with classic PaaS offerings. If you prefer a fully hosted environment like Heroku, Fly or Vercel, we’ll host a cluster for you and offer you a one-click migration to your own cluster when you want.

The Problem

Although 50-70% of organizations have already adopted Kubernetes, most developers agree that it is too complex and difficult to manage. It is intended to be extremely flexible in order to solve pretty much everyone’s needs, however, it can take a ton of work and many auxiliary tools to get there.

As companies grow, they spend a lot on DevOps or Platform Engineers that try to reduce the burden on developers by gluing together all the 3rd party tools via custom internal tools.

Our Solution

We give you an “internal developer platform” out of the box, with best practices and golden paths for building and operating services on Kubernetes.

We do the research on the latest and greatest tools in the extremely vibrant ecosystem, and automatically integrate for you the tools you want to use.

We operate on your code and in your Cloud environment, so you’re never locked in and never restricted, as is common with classic PaaS offerings.

If you prefer a fully hosted environment like Heroku, Fly or Vercel, we’ll host a cluster for you and offer you a one-click migration to your own cluster whenever you want.

Our Ask 🙏

Contact us - We have a few last slots left in our beta - we’d love to see if we can help you step up your Kubernetes game or migrate, so that you can focus on building your own product instead of configuring YAML files and tools all day.

We also offer free Kubernetes consultation!

Please contact us or book time - we’d love to assist, even if you don’t end up using our product. Learning about real-life challenges that you are facing and trying to help you navigate them helps inform our roadmap and focus.

A platform for microservices on Kubernetes

What is your company going to make? Please describe your product and what it does or will do.

An opinionated platform for creating, developing and operating microservices on k8s, integrating 3p tools to offer “golden paths” with best practices out of the box. We offer a service dashboard and a CLI which interact with your code and your cloud environment, and configure for you the 15-20+ tools you need to run production services: CI/CD, build and packaging, integration tests, rollouts, networking, observability instrumentation (logging/monitoring/tracing/profiling), secrets, healthchecks, alerting, API documentation and discovery, code analysis, IAM/RBAC, experiments, autoscaling…

We structure services’ code and configuration in a consistent, standardized and modular way, enabling meaningful automation and a “magical” experience. For example, we can automatically take a regular k8s deployment and replace it with Argo for a smarter rollout strategy, or dynamically bring up a dev/testing environment with a combination of services - with no effort by the developer.

We let each organization customize which tools they want to use, and not force a single option in each category of tool. Customers always retain control of their code and cloud environment, and can stray from our recommended path for any specific tool, giving them the flexibility they need and alleviating concerns for both initial adoption and lock-in.

Major benefits to customers:

  • Dev velocity - much faster to bootstrap new services and bring them to production.

  • Reliability - streamlined operations because services are consistent, well instrumented with pre-configured mitigations, resulting in improved SLOs and MTTR.

  • Cost - both from the improved velocity and reliability, and by automatically integrating best-in-class tools for spend reduction (autoscaling, spot instances etc).
